Snow & Winter Services

Winter is right around the corner and with it brings the snow and ice.  I would like to take this opportunity to address some key points about the snow removal services for your community.
When a winter weather advisory is reported our crews go into action moving the necessary equipment into the community to assure our readiness to complete this service in a safe and timely manner.
It is the responsibility of your township to clear the community streets and roadways. Only once the streets are adequately cleared we can begin the process of clearing driveways.
Safety is our priority, so first and foremost our goal is to clear all of the driveways to provide the residents with a safe exit route from their homes.  No one wants to feel like they are snow bound and without an exit in the event of an emergency. Our next priority is the clearing of your service walkways.
Depending on the amount of accumulation, our crews will return the following day to do fine clearing of driveway aprons, walkways, access to mailboxes and fire hydrants, and ensuring that the street sewer grates are clear of ice and debris.
Snow removal is not a perfect science as conditions are always different and can change readily.  What begins as a light fluffy snow fall can turn within hours into a wet heavy ice encrusted mess. We ask for your patience and that you please avoid approaching active machinery to speak with the machine operators.  This is a safety concern for both you as well as our employees.

**Please note all medical priority service must be approved by Management prior to snow events.

Through the event we stay in close contact with board members and management staff and work upon their direction to fully meet the specific needs of your community.

During snow events we will be doing community updates every two hours during the hours of
6 am- 10 pm, or as required during overnight hours.

What you need to do following this service.

Please DO NOT rake/remove the remaining soil plugs from your lawn.  They will breakdown back into the soil over time.

Keep grass seed moist to facilitate the best germination of the grass.

Just some information on the services we will be completing...

What are the benefits of core aeration?
Core aeration helps the lawn’s health and vigor, and it reduces maintenance requirements. The following are other benefits of core aeration:

• Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere
• Enhanced soil water uptake
• Improved fertilizer uptake and use
• Reduced water runoff and puddling
• Improved turf grass rooting
• Reduced soil compaction
• Enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance
• Improved resiliency and cushioning
• Enhanced thatch breakdown

Broadcast overseeding of front lawn areas will be completed, utilizing a fescue variety of grass seed.  Fescue grass varieties are drought tolerant, require less fertilizer, develop a deep root system and thus are eco friendly.

How Soil Amendments Work
Amendments are added to soil to change and improve it. Unlike fertilizers, which add nutrients to soil, amendments modify the condition of the soil itself. The condition of the soil and specifically its suitability for supporting plant roots is what soil experts call “tilth." When tilth is right, plants experience healthy growth.

Used properly, amendments alter soil so growing becomes simpler. For example, roots penetrate surrounding soil more easily and water infiltration improves. Soil amendments also change soil in ways that affect the availability of plant nutrients that occur naturally or that are added by fertilizers.

In new lawns and gardens under regular cultivation, soil amendments are mixed down into the soil, often well before planting time. In established lawns and ornamental plantings, soil amendments are applied to the surface and watered in, so grasses and other plants aren't disturbed. Unlike mulches, which are placed on top of soil and meant to stay there, amendments are meant to get down into the soil and get to work.

Fertilizers impact plant growth directly, while soil amendments affect growth indirectly and sometimes deliver nutrients as a bonus. Soil amendments aren't fertilizer substitutes. Instead, they help fertilizers do the job they're intended to do by getting tilth and other factors in order.

Fall Really Is The Start Of The Growing Season

by Linda Kraft, Meticulous Landscaping, Inc.

The natural thought is that spring is the start of the lawn, tree and shrub growing season. But it actually is during this time of the year that your living outdoor investments are taking in available nutrients and water to sustain them through the dormant winter and prepare them to awaken in the spring.  Available nutrients are found in the soil such as nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium which are essential to the health of a plant.  During the month of September and then again in November, Meticulous Landscaping, completes a balanced slow release fertilizer application to all lawn areas to ensure these nutrients are available to the grass plant.
To the homeowner, we recommend providing these same nutrients to your trees and shrubs.  This can either be completed using a quality balanced slow release fertilizer product in either a liquid, granular or staked form.  These products are readily available at home and garden centers.  Remember to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure the best results.
Annual core aeration and seeding of the lawn is also highly recommended for the following reasons.  The practice of aerating your lawn has many benefits such as reducing soil compaction, allowing oxygen into the soil and bringing those valuable microorganisms up to the soil surface.  After several years, mature grass plants begin to slow down their reproductive rate.  Since a blade of grass lives only an average of 45 to 60 days, production of new tillers must continually outpace the dieback of older leaves.  Young grass will produce tillers faster than older grass.  Therefore, one of the most important secrets to maintaining a healthy, thick lawn is to make sure your grass is young.  The practice of overseeding lawns is the easiest way of keeping grass young.  The month of September is the perfect time of year to make an application of new grass seed.  Soil temperatures are still warm enough and irrigation systems are still in operation for the season to promote optimal germination of the grass seed.  But, remember the quality of the grass seed will directly relate to the quality of the grass plant, use a quality seed consisting of a fescue, rye and bluegrass blend. Please remember to keep the newly seeded lawn moist to promote optimal germination.
